a tail of two dogs

(yes, I know it's supposed to be "tale"!)

The other day Ben and I were talking about our girls and how much they're really like us. I've always believed that people select dogs that are similar to them, and with us it's true! When we took Dix to puppy school, there was a lady with a poodle. Now, I'm not pregidious against poodles, but both the dog and the lady were SNOBBY! B also said "yeah, and they looked just a like...(big curly hair)", but that's not my place to judge! ;) No matter how many times Dix and the other puppies wanted to play (during open play) the poodle  would just get snippy. The owner would just say "oh, she only plays with poodles". Well then...la-de-da to you!

Anyways...I've concluded that both my girls are in some ways just like me.

Dixie Belle:

-she's unsure of people she doesn't know (I'm cautious when making new friends, entering a new situation)
-LOVES "her" people (as do I)
-is confident that no matter what, her people will take care of her i.e. feed, let out etc (I know B and our families will always take care of me...no matter what)
-she's very smart (of course...I am too!ha!!)
-she can be bratty  (Ben tends to think this is our most favored trait)
-highly treat motivated (I tend to work better at a goal, when there's something in it for me!)
-loves her sleep (guilty!)

Memphis Girl:

-she's hands down the sweetest dog, ever. (I have my moments of sweetness!)
-since she was abused/neglected, she's still anxious about when she'll get her next meal. It's taking time, but she's learning to trust us to take care of her. (I'm anxious about a lot of things right now. I'm learning to trust God and let Him work His plan)
-she LOVES to play (at the end of the day, I just want to have a fun time in this life!)
-she's our cuddle bug and loves to be in our laps (there's nothing better than cuddling up with the one ya love)
-she's a talker. I've only heard the dog actually bark like 3x's. She talks, especially when she wants us to feed her!! (if you know me, you know I don't shut up! I get it honestly though...mom!)

I could go on all day, but it's crazy how much we're really alike! I think we ended up with two of the best dogs, so I am pretty happy!

MIL

You often hear horror stories about the dreaded mother-in-law, but you wont hear those from me! When it comes to MIL's, I think I've hit the jackpot! Yes, there are things we don't agree on, things about each other that may get on each others nerves and yes I even stole her "baby boy" (she can have him back though...anytime...ha!), but all in all I think we're pretty good {gasp} friends!

Today is her birthday. If not for her (and well FIL too) my Love wouldn't be here (or in one piece), so I would like to wish her a wonderful 30th birthday!!

When all else fails...

READ THE MANUAL!

A few weeks ago, we purchased a new fan for our bedroom. Since our schedules and the day light finally allowed, we decided to hang it today. This is the second fan we've hung, so we thought "no big deal"!

We take the old fan down, and quickly moved right along to getting the new one put together. We get the part that holds the fan up, no problem. We go to hook up the wires, and of course it's not cooperating...one wire had to be a little difficult. Finally, we got the wires up and connected. But...as luck would have it, as soon as he put the cover on the wires...all of the wire nuts fell off. So, back to square one!
Before

Next, we attached the light thing to the main part of the fan. One of the screws dropped INSIDE the main part, and of course we cannot get it out. Thankfully 2 out of 3 screws were okay! But...it was leaning. So....we had to take the main thing down and re-hang it; it only took one try to get it right!

At this stage, the sun has set and we have no light. B had a "Trouble light" that I had to hold the entire time (I felt like the statue of liberty...ha!).  Somehow the bulb became loose, causing it to constantly flicker (it was too hot at this point to touch). That meant we occasionally had complete darkness, until I could shake it and get it working! Fun.
after several attempts...

After we attached the light part, we connected the blades to the fan. They went up quickly! Great!!

We turned on the power and....the fan worked, but the lights did not. At this point, I had to laugh.

Back to sqaure one. Oh and now, the "trouble light" stopped working and neither did B's flashlight! Thankfully his mom just gave us some for Christmas, so we had back up!

We checked the wires not once, but twice. We checked the light part and it was good. But the lights still were not working.

Then....I kindly suggested "um....maybe you should read the manual".

That's when we discovered that the wires weren't "right" (in fairness to B...it was odd) and we had to hook 'em up another way. So, we undid the thing (very technical), re-connected the wires the way the manual said, and checked it, and it worked!! Yay!

But wait, when we had to attach the "thing" back to the ceiling, ALL the wire nuts fell out AGAIN!

At this point, I'm laughing because this can only happen to us. I started singing "three hour tour" from Gilligans Island, because we were going on hour 3 and it still wasn't working!

Thankfully, my husband didn't let me call and beg an electrician to come quit!! He finally got it all up, connected and most importantly working.

I can totally see why the professionals charge the amount they do for install. It's tedious, frustrating, a great shoulder work out, and in our case comical!
done! finally!

If I never install another light, it will be too soon! But...I'm glad to get rid of the ole brassy thing!

misc monday

1. We are officially hooked on Swanky's Taco Shop and aren't even afraid to admit it! If you're ever in Memphis (or Franklin...outside of Nashville), you must try this place! I think we've eaten there once a week for the past month. Oops! It's good food and not that expensive!

2. After our weekly patronage to Swankys, we had to run to pick up a contact for me. [Side note: for some reason, I keep tearing my left contact. Of course, it's the eye that I have a -700 which means I'm blind as a bat. So frustrating]

I saw a sign for a newish frozen yogurt place, Gracie Bleu, and of course I had to try it! We split a cup and it was delicious! It's a less-guilty treat since it's low fat/non fat and no sugar added (except those pesky m&m's and oreos that fell into my bowl).

3. My girls are depressed. They aren't getting as much exercise as they'd like and they're frankly getting on our nerves...ha! Hopefully, it wont be too cold soon so we can run their butts take 'em to the park!
the bums watching tv! :-)

4. Isn't this sink amazing? I am trying to convince Ben to make it for our bathroom, but he isn't too keen on the idea! I think it would be awesome and I highly doubt any of our neighbors have one! :-)
made from concrete!!

Have a great week y'all!

free photo book!

Everyone loves a custom photo book, right?? I do! But, I don't love paying $30+ for one. I was excited to receive an e-mail with a coupon code for a free (all you pay is shipping) 8x11 photo book at Snapfish! It sounded too good to be true, so I went yesterday and spent practically 2 hours tweaking my book. I was finally done, entered the code and it had EXPIRED (I was a day late). I was disappointed and decided I didn't really need that book. Well...today, I received the new code for the free book!

Go to Snapfish.com, upload pictures and create your own classic 8x11 photo book (approx 20 pages).

Enter in the coupon code spot: YAYFREEBOOK

You'll get $24.99 OFF and all you'll pay is the shipping.

Act now...because I'm not sure when this code will expire!

I'm pretty happy with my deal of the day and can't wait to see the actual product!

the B-I-B-L-E

yeah...that's the book for me....I stand alone on the word of God....the B-i-b-l-e!
(or something like that....I'll have that song in my head all night)

Number 27 on my Bucket List (in no particular order) states "Attend a Bible study". I've wanted to attend one for a while, but haven't really done the leg work to find one. I was in the office at work and overheard my boss and a co-worker discussing their Bible lesson from the "study" and it peaked my curiousity. Long story short, they invited me to their Bible study and I accepted! My co-worker even went out the next day and got the Chronological Bible that we'd be using for me, so I was all set!

The class was held at probably the biggest Baptist (I'm still shocked it didn't burn down when I, a token Catholic, entered!) church I've ever seen. In fact, when we moved to Memphis, someone referred to this church as "Six Flags Under Jesus"! I have to agree...it's that big!

Thankfully I was able to be at the same table with my co-workers, so I wasn't to intimidated! This week we discussed Job and it was nice to hear the speaker's point of view on the subject.
the stage where the speaker spoke!

I actually took a lot away from the discussion and came out with a tad more clarity on why good people suffer. The speaker said "Suffering, or the lack thereof, does not equate righteousness". Basically, that God allows good people to go go through various degrees of suffering, not as punishment for sin, but to ultimately draw us closer to God.

It was reassuring to me, and I look forward to next week's discussion!

Another one off my bucket list...next one: dog sledding in Alaska!!

Beer and Cheese...yes, please!

In effort to make good on my resolution to eat healthier more of a variety, I decided to make a new soup. We're not normally soup people, but it sounded great (plus it's so cold out)!

I attempted to make this soup twice this week, and finally got to make it tonight! First attempt: I didn't have any onion or 2 cans of cream of celery soup. Second attempt: B went to the store for me and purchased cream of mushroom (in his defense, it was in the COC spot) soup, so I couldn't make it then either.

It's souper easy (get it...ha!) and quite tasty.

Beer Cheese Soup:

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter
  • 2 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed cream of celery soup, undiluted
  • 1 cup beer or nonalcoholic beer
  • 1 cup whole milk (I used 2% which is fine, but whole would be creamier I bet)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 3/4 pound process cheese (Velveeta), cubed

Directions

  • In a large saucepan, saute onion in butter. Stir in the soup, beer, milk, Worcestershire sauce, parsley and paprika. Reduce heat; stir in cheese until melted. Heat through (do not boil). Yield: 6 servings.

It's SNOW fun!

It snowed here in good ole southwest Tennessee! Earlier this week it was in the 50's, so I really didnt believe the weather men about the snow, but they were right! It started at about 6 last night and is still flurrying off and on! We received about 4 inches, which is a lot for us!

Of course, as soon as I woke up I was itchin' to go out! The girls were too because they love it just as much as I do! I had to get something out of my car, and while I was out my neighbor's 4 year old daughter said "Hi Emily"! She was in in the process of building a snowman, so I had to join her! While there, I discovered she really wanted to have a snow ball fight, but her mom didn't. I packed a small ball and threw it at her (gently of course) and started our very own snow ball fight! She and I both had a blast! I think she won though. Maybe next time, I'll get her!

my neighbors building the snowman!

my new competitor friend

I let B sleep in for as long as I could, then the girls and I ambushed woke him up! After some grumbling (about it being his day off and I should be at work..ha), he got dressed and joined us for snow fun!
2 feet of snow!

loves those snow balls!

she's got mad jumping skills

Punk!

B and the girls playing...proof he does enjoy it!

I got him back (at least a little bit)

Dixie Belle...(love this picture of her)

Memphis Girl could stay out side all day in the snow if we let her!

I hope this is the start of a great snow season this year!!

It's snow fun!

3 in 1

I started the "11 in 11" blog link up last week, but then things got a bit crazy so I haven't done a few. So...now, that my internet is working and I have a minute I thought I'd post a few.

Day 5: Places you hope to go this year:

Minneapolis, Minnesota: We'll be there in March, not really by choice since the Mayo Clinic is an hour away. I found out that the "Mall of America" is there, so I'm pretty excited! It'll also help me cross that state off of my bucket list!

Hot Springs, Arkansas: we have been talking about going since we've moved here, but haven't. I've heard wonderful things about this place, so I'm excited to go visit. I think it's high time to go since we only live 2 hrs away.

Beach with my family: we're most likely not doing a family cruise this year, but instead thinking of going to a beach and renting a house! I think it'll be a lot of fun!

Day 7: favorite memory of 2010

1) our family cruise in January! It was perfect and we had a blast!
the group with our waiters!

2) SNOW: we had a lot of snow last year, and I hope this year is the same!
Snow Angels!

3) Flood of '10: I know it's not a good favorite, but in the end, it showed me how wonderful our community really is!
my brother and I after spending the morning cleaning up our old school

4) 5k: I was so proud of myself for completing the training and getting 2nd place in my division!
5k done!!

5) Ben's 30th birthday CRUISE!! It was unbelievable and we had the time of our lives.
Cozumel, Mexico

6) Spending quality time with our family and friends!
Sweet memories of a sweet man!

seeing her makes me happy!

Day 9: favorite thing to do on a cold winter day:

I actually asked the kids at work this question and the majority of them said "snow ball fight"! I have to agree...snow ball fights with B are my favorite thing about a snow day!

If it's just a cold day with out snow, I love to put on B's highly fashionable old, huge, comfy sweat pants (that I've permanently borrowed) etc  and curl up on the couch with a cup of soup and/or hot chocolate. I let the pups join me because they are excellent heaters! I usually just let myself be a bum on really cold days and watch countless hours of mind stimulating thoughtless TV!

New Year's memories

Two new bloggers I've discovered are hosting an "11 in 2011" link up thing! I decided to participate and today's topic is "Holiday Memories". Since it's New Years, I decided to stick with it!

Growing up, I was always determined to stay up til midnight and watch the ball drop (either at home or out with friends)! My parents however, did not and usually went to bed early! I remember my favorite thing to say growing up (and heck, now) was "see you (or be back) next year!" I got the biggest kick out of it! Yeah, it doesn't take much to amuse me!

When Ben and I first met (8 years ago...whoa), his Granddad had a New Year's day tradition of taking the entire family (his mom, uncles and cousins) to Ryan's or Golden Corral for lunch! If B was in town, we'd go and of course stuff our faces! It was always nice to spend time with his family and especially his Granddad!
New Year's day '10

It was quite difficult to not have this again this year.

I resolve...

Happy 2011 y'all!

I've decided to have a few resolutions this year and will do my darndest to stick to 'em!

1. Work out at least 3x's a week! I know...I know, it's the cliche NY's resolution, but I have got to do this! I was working out a lot this summer and never felt better, so I'm determined to continue!

2. Go to church. Sounds simple, but it is easy to forgo this for a myriad of reasons! I keep reminding myself "God gives me the week...I can give Him at least an hour"

3. Cook more of a variety of  some-what healthy meals! I get sick of the same three meals that I usually make and  I'm sure B will be very happy about this one! Oh...and maybe not go to Jim N Nicks so much that the to-go lady knows my name/order!

What are you resolving to do this new year? Head over to Kit's blog to participate in a NY's  "link up"!
