I'm proud to be an...

Australian???

This has Ben's name written all over it! He think he's funny. I laughed, but that's our little secret! I guess I need to start saying G'day mate and crikey (or however you spell that) since we're in AUS now!

This is how the mantel should look all decked out for the 4th of July:

I also found a cute subway art for the 4th for our table.

I guess he couldn't figure a way to change this...ha!

Off to learn our Australian pledge...lol.

craft fail

I decided I wanted to make a cute necklace hanger out of an old picture frame. I scoured Goodwill and found a frame that would work.  I sprayed painted the frame and thought this craft would be easy peasy.

I went to HobLob to get the other supplies, and my first mistake was going when Ben was with me. Note: don't go to craft store when anti-craft husband is impatiently waiting in the car. I completely forgot the cork board that I went in for and didn't find any fabric I liked. I made do with cute scrapbook paper.
before

I get home, found out that I forgot the daggum cork board, so I decided to improvise and put scrapbook paper onto the cardboard back part  to see what it looked like. Well, it looked just plain AWFUL. The paper didn't fit the back just right, so I had to cut it and make it work, apparently not too well. Plus, the glue I used didn't do right, so it was lumpy.  I showed Ben and his reaction was classic (face was like WTH is that) "well, it's kinda.... choppy...". Yeah, choppy isn't what I was going for.

So, I threw that away and decided to go another direction. I didn't even take a picture of my epic fail, because it was just too bad!

But....I had to use my already sprayed painted frame. So I dug out my inner MacGuyvre and Martha and figured out how to salvage my craft time.

I used the picture hanging wire that came in a nail kit I got a long time ago and strung it across the frame, so that it wasn't too tight or loose. I  used hot glue and good ole duct tape to adhere it to the frame.

I let it dry and then took regular paper clips and attached some pictures to the wire. Instant, changeable frame! But wait, there's more! The bright idea came to me (thanks to Pinterest) to hang my earrings up on the wire as well, so they won't get tangled. Genius.

So here's my $4, craft fail turned kinda cute picture frame/ earring holder:

(the green is a brighter apple green than in the pic)

I think I'm going to postpone all future craft projects....!

According to Ben....

One of my favorite bloggers, Chelsea, is having a "blog challenge" this week! Her blog is always so witty, well written (she really needs to write a book!) and today was no exception! Today's challenge is behind the blog/meet the blogger. She had her husband tell us things we may not know about her and I thought I'd do the same!
from Chelsea's blog!

Our convo went something like this:

Me: "hey....I need your help....can you write a blog post about me?
Ben: "blog?"
Me: "whatever...come on and write a few things people may not know about me....and do not say that I'm a brat"
Ben: "ok.....brat!"

So...here's a few things, according to my husband, that you may not know about me! My rebuttal is in parenthesis

Emily:
Cannot watch people cry on TV  and hates commercials.

(so true...I either mute or fast forward scenes where people are crying....drives me nuts!)

Thinks our bedroom is an extension of the kitchen; Literally, there are plates hanging on the wall above our heads.
(um...they're cute and were in the "budget"! I get my plate love honestly though...my Granny loves plates and so does my mom! He should  just be thankful they aren't knives! ha)

Can remember her way to and from just about any location  and is a bossy passenger seat driver.
(Garmin has nothing on me! I have a photographic memory and can usually recall landmarks etc after I've gone somewhere once. And I've never been bossy a day in my life! Gah.)

Talks in her sleep, literally carries on conversations with me and has no recollection after.
(I still don't believe this! He says he's going to video tape me and put it on You Tube....)

Is still in love with Dale Murphy, a former Atlanta Braves player.
(When I was a toddler, I would see him on TV and up to kiss him on the screen! I do really like him and hope he can get into the hall of fame soon.  And the only man I'm still in love with is my husband....awww....see I'm sweet!)

Loves green roofs on the tops of little white houses.

(Yep....one of these days I'm going to live in an old, white farmhouse with a green roof. There is just something about those houses that make my Southern heart swoon!)

So now ya have the inside dope on the Fishbowl, and you didn't even need a backstage pass! ;-)

al fresco at its finest

Yesterday my parents decided to pay us a visit! They haven't been down since before Christmas, so their visit was long overdue.

When they arrived, I took them to our addiction favorite place, Swankys. Apparently B and I eat there way to much because we received a free meal from their loyalty program! Score for us! My parents ordered the fish tacos and said it was delicious!  After lunch, my mom and I left my dad to fend for himself and we went for much needed girl time and pedicures.
mom wasn't in the mood for pictures...ha!

We decided to go back and check on the boys (B was home by then) and go for a walk around the neighborhood. After the walk it was time for dinner, so we decided to treat my parents to B's skills on the grill! We had grilled corn, chicken and baked potatoes. It was delicious, if I say so myself!!

We opted to eat outside on our patio and I have to say, it was the nicest al fresco dining and evening I've had in a long time. The weather was great, the food was awesome and the company was outstanding.
My Parents!

yummy corn on my cute little corn plates ($1 at Tarjay!)

I decided we should all go to YoLo and get some dessert! My parents loved their gelatto (sp?) and came away believers! After our sugar fix, we went home and watched "Life as We Know It" and then called it a night.
peach gelatto and my yogurt!

YoLo makes ya Loco! lol

Unfortunately, they had to leave early this morning, but we had a wonderful time! They made their reservation for another dinner soon though!

dog days of summer

The girls reminded me that according to their contract, I have to blog about them once in a while! ha!

Things they enjoy this Summer:

They love to sunbathe for approximately 5.5 minutes, then they're off to find some shade. (don't worry, I only let 'em out for limited time in the heat)

They love evening walks, but try to poop out on me towards the end.  Lazy.

Memphis Girl

They really love it when Ben grills. They know he'll hook 'em up with a hotdog. They're not spoiled.

They love shedding their coat, again.

They really love seeing me sweep 19 times a day.

They love their Daddy and even made him a "father's day" card!

B calls Dix: Llama and MG: Squirrel

They're loving these dog days of summer.

it's SNO good!

I have heard about a wonderful sno cone place here in Memphis, but haven't been able to check it out. Well, today my luck changed and I was finally able to enjoy me a good ole fashion sno cone!

My sweet friend Aimee and her two kiddos took me and I had a wonderful time! Jerry's Sno Cones has been around forever and apparently everyone loves it because the line was crazy long!

I decided, after much debate, (they have lots of flavors) to go with Pink Lemonade with ice cream. Oh em gee it was good and just what the Doctor ordered on this hot day!

It was sno good, but the company was even better!

(Thanks Aimee, L and AR! I had a blast!)

He loved me first!

Happy Father's Day to an amazing man, I have the the privilege to call, my Dad! Thanks for loving me, teaching me, cheering for me, disciplining me, and for always being there for me!
Love you more than you know...

always,
your baby girl

My t-shirt helps!

Last year Nashville sustained massive, historical flooding. It was devastating. As a proud Nashvillian, I wanted to do something to help. My SIL informed me of a site for cool flood related t-shirts and the profits go towards flood relief. I immediately bought me one and proudly wear it to this day.

Fast forward almost a year to the date of the Nashville flood, the Mississippi River decided to flood at historical levels and Memphis sustain some damage (not as much as the media hype). So the cool people at MSH created a shirt for Memphis' flood relief, and I of course bought one.

I joked and said "I sure hope next year I'm not buying a "I Heart Knoxville" shirt. Seriously, I think TN has had enough flooding for a while! :-)

If you would like to help your fellow neighbors rebuild after devastating floods and tornadoes (they have some for Joplin and Alabama)...buy you a cool shirt! It really does help! :-)

wee bit!

I'm trying my hardest to put off doing chores and dreading going to the dentist (again), so I thought I'd glue myself to the computer and blog! Floors can sweep their self, right??

Here's a wee bit about me:

{one} what color best describes you + why?
Never thought about this one: hmm...

{two} how have you changed in the past year?
A year or so ago, I really didn't want to be here in Memphis, like really didn't. Now, a year later I've accepted my situation and now I love my new home. Big deal for me!

{three} have you ever had any surgeries?
yep.
I had my tonsils and adeniods out as a child.
Hopefully, that will be the only one until the dreaded open heart.

{four} why did you start your blog?
I used to scrapbook, but don't have the time or proper place to do so. This blog serves as both a social outlet (met some fab people from here) and scrapbook.

{five} what are you looking forward to this summer?
Going to St. Louis to catch a Braves game (hopefully).
Possible river/tubing trip

{six} do you have any family traditions for the 4th of July?
My brother and his wife met & later married on July 3rd, so they usually host a big July 4 bash.
We'll usually go watch fireworks if we can't go to the bash.

{seven} what’s something new that you’ve tried in the past few months?
-Arnold Palmer -1/2 tea 1/2 lemonade...yuuum!
-Coupons! I'm hooked.

{eight} what is the perfect a/c temperature?

68 in the summer

{nine} what was the last movie you saw in the theater?
Hangover II with our good friends Sam and Leslie!
So wrong yet funny.

{ten} what song do you think everyone should hear at least once?
Jesus Loves Me
(Ha....I'm not a big song buff, so I really can't recall one)

extreme couponing

Well more like just beginning-hopeIdontscrewitup couponing...ha!

B and I watched a few episodes of the TLC show "Extreme Couponing" and were both appalled and intrigued at the same time. I usually try to use coupons or get stuff on sale as much as possible, but wanted to learn how to do it better. Thankfully, I subscribe to a couple free e-mail services/websites  that break the whole coupon thing down Barney style.

Well, I finally started this past weekend and I'm hooked! I don't plan on going extreme (who needs 54 bottles of hot sauce, really?), but I'm excited to be saving some money!

Here's my loot:

Three boxed of Mac-N-Cheese, 2 deodorants,  3 Lysol toilet bowl cleaners, Bayer aspirin 20 ct, 3 crunch bars and a Smart water for around $12. (The Lysol alone goes for $3 usually.!)

Two things of ALL detergent, 2 four packs of razors, Nivea men's body wash and bandaids for less than $7! I scored the body wash for 4 CENTS! I left Target only paying $.042 for the bandaids and wash!!

Do you coupon? Got any tips??

King of the Grill

A couple years ago, Ben's parents generously gave us a charcoal grill. It was formally a hot water tank (someone converted it into a grill), so that joker was huge. It was perfect for grilling out when we had a lot or company, but not so convenient when it was just the two of us. A new grill was just not in the budget, so we made do.
charcoal grill

A couple months ago my parents upgraded their grill, and we scored their old Weber gas grill. It is at least 15 years old, but my dad generously got all new parts for it! Brand new Weber's cost at least a few hundred bucks, so we really lucked out! We finally used it tonight and are looking forward to grilling out this summer!

King :)

We grilled out steaks and corn on the cob! It was sooo good! B even cooked the girls some hotdogs. They're not spoiled, at all.

yummy grilled corn on the cob

He has definitely proved himself to be the king of the grill! Good thing I'm keepin him around for a while. ha!

Parties, Parents, Porkchops and Pups...oh my!

The main reason we went back home for the weekend was for B's Grandmother's surprise birthday party.  His mom and Aunt Teresa (she made the cutest invites too!) planned it perfectly, so we were thrilled we were able to make it! Throwing a surprise party is hard work, but Grandmomma was truly surprised and thrilled! It was so nice seeing all his family too!

75 years young

After her party, we headed over to my parents house for a cook out with my immediate family! My Nephews were there and cuter than ever! Will met me at the door with a portrait that he drew all by himself (and wrote my name)! He made one for Ben too, which made our day! Picaso better watch out! ha!

Sweet boy!

I could just eat him up...dirty face and all!

We stuffed ourselves with delicious grilled pork chops, twice baked potatoes and grilled veggies! My mom also made the best new dessert I've tried in a while: "Sweet Tea Icebox Tart" from Southern Living. It was sooo good.

We played, chatted and ate for a while then headed over to our friend Dave's house. He just got a new Blue Heeler puppy and I couldn't wait to see her (well, him too, I guess)!! Sadie Mae was absolutely adorable. Almost made me want another dog, but I quickly remembered that the two I had were more than enough!

Oh and to top off our wonderful weekend, we had lunch at Monells on Sunday! Our friends Dave,  Justin, Sheena and their (Justin and Sheena's) adorable newly born baby Sophia! It's family style seating and set menu served family style as well. The food was Southern food at it's best and the company was even better! I thoroughly enjoyed my food, but tried to hurry so I could steal Sophia for a bit! She was the perfect baby and either stared at me or slept the whole time! If only I could've have taken her with me!

Southern cookin' makes ya good lookin'

Sweet Sophia!

What a perfect weekend!!

Eat. Drink. Be...

HOT Happy!

We went home to Nashville this weekend, so while we were there B, my mom and I decided to go to the "Taste of Music City" festivities on Saturday. It had booths from different local restaurants, bars, breweries etc and you could purchase tickets to exchange for the drink/food whatnot.  We sampled some beer, wine (mostly to get the glasses B wanted) and a yummy fish taco from Mere Bulles. My mom had a few tickets left, so we finished with a good COLD cup of dippin dots!! Hit the spot.

Arrington Vineyards wine and Yazoo beer! Nashville's finest!

(thank God for the cool rag they were giving away!)

mom and me!

I heart Nashville!!

It was a ton of fun, but man alive was it HOT! We had plans that afternoon, so we couldn't stay too long but we made sure to scope out all the booths.

at the ole ball game....

(AT&T finally came out today and replaced our modem and fixed the lines that the first guy didn't do right....a week is too long to go with out the internets!)

Sunday we went to the Memphis Redbirds (triple A team) game with our sweet friends, Caroline and Fred! Before the game, we ate at Flying Fish and had a yummy meal and a nice conversation! After filling our bellies, we headed to catch the game!

Caroline and Fred!

Fred using his Go-Go Gadget arm to take our picture...lol!

Rockey the Red Bird

The game was really fun (albeit hotter than blue blazes) and the RB's pulled off a win! Caroline and I really wanted a baseball helmet of ice cream, but the line was ridiculously long. What's better than over priced ice cream in a helmet you ask.....um, YoLo! We left a bit early and headed to our favorite yogurt place to cool off from the heat!

We had a fun time and can't wait to do it again!! (too bad they don't play baseball in the fall/winter though....ha!)
